6 Everyday Ways to Improve Child Social Skills

As a parent, you’re committed to helping your child thrive in their environment. You know that they need to develop important social skills before they enter school.

But how can you help improve child social skills? We’re here to offer advice. Keep reading to learn a few tips for helping your child develop their communication abilities.

1. Mirror Your Child

From the time that your child is born (or comes into your life if it wasn’t a biological child), you should start learning how to mirror. For many parents, mirroring is innate. For parents who struggle with emotional recognition, it can be challenging.

Mirroring your child means that you’re mimicking and responding to their emotions and thoughts. This helps your child feel validated and encourages that same type of mirroring when they interact with others.

2. Expose Them to New People

There’s no one way to learn how to make your child social. Many children will never be “social” per se, but they can still advance their social skills and reduce social anxiety through exposure to new social situations.

Take every available opportunity to socialize your child. Whether that means bringing them to the park, bringing them with you on errands, or setting up playdates, you want to make sure that they’re seeing and interacting with people from infancy.

This will build a foundation of stronger social skills even before they start speaking.

3. Encourage Communication (Both Verbal and Non-Verbal)

If your child struggles to communicate, don’t give up. You can improve children’s social skills even if they aren’t able to express themselves verbally.

Teach your child how to greet people and express emotions. You can use words if your child is verbal, but you can also try teaching your child simple sign language.

Continue supporting your child even if they’re struggling. Children’s social skills develop at different rates.

4. Teach Emotions and Empathy With Books and Shows

Children aren’t born with empathy; they’re inherently self-centered as a survival tactic. You can start the learning process with mirroring, but once your child is old enough, you can also teach emotions and empathy with books and shows.

Did you know that reading literary fiction can enhance empathy? Children are able to connect with characters and put themselves in their positions. This is a great way to figure out how to educate your child in a way that also entertains them.

5. Consider Bringing in a Professional

If your child is still struggling socially, there’s nothing wrong with asking a professional for help. Some children just need an extra boost, and that’s okay!

Professionals understand that childhood development of social skills varies amongst children. They can meet your child where they are and work through any social challenges that they’re struggling with.

6. Get Your Child Involved In Music

Music can be a great way to improve a child’s social skills. Music is an activity that encourages collaboration and teaches children how to work together as a team. It also allows them to express themselves creatively, allowing them to develop their emotional intelligence and improve their communication skills. Listening to music and playing instruments can help children improve their attention span and concentration, which can help them in social situations. Singing is also a great way to improve language development, as children learn how to articulate their thoughts and ideas through lyrics.
