How to Keep Your Dog Safe at Home

When you own a pet, you’re responsible for its well-being. You need to keep it healthy, happy, and comfortable. This is obviously good for your pet, because they’re not going to get needlessly hurt, but it’s also good for your family. We love our dogs and other pets, and it can be very upsetting when they get lost or injured.

So, here are some tips to help you make sure your dog is safe at home, both for their own good and for your peace of mind.

Training Your Dog

One of the most important ways to keep your dog safe is to make sure they’re properly trained. Whether you get a puppy or an adult dog, you can always teach a dog new tricks. But before you focus on more exciting tricks, you should make sure your dog knows when to listen to you.

Most dogs learn how to sit very easily. This can be a good first thing to train because, as well as teaching them manners, you also teach them how to do tricks and to be obedient.

From there, you can teach them to be obedient in ways to keep them safe. Teach your dog to come when called, to stay by your side when commanded, and to leave things on the floor. These, and other tricks, all help you keep your dog safe from potential dangers.

Pet Insurance

Unfortunately, there are some things that you can’t predict. If your dog gets hurt or shows signs of an illness, you should take it to the vet as soon as possible. The sooner you act, the better the prognosis will be for your dog.

Vet bills can be very expensive, but with pet insurance, you can feel more confident about taking your pet to the vet when you need to. You should also take your dog for regular checkups, so you can make sure they’re as healthy as possible all the time. It’s much cheaper to get a checkup rather than needing emergency care for a problem you didn’t know they had, and it’s better for your dog.

When You’re Not Around

What about when you’re out and about? If you’re gone for long periods of time, you may consider getting a pet sitter or finding another way to make sure your dog is looked after. But what about during the day?

One thing that can help you keep your dog safe is by crate training them. Some dogs feel a lot more secure and comfortable when they have a den, and you can put them into the crate during the night or when you’re out. This isn’t a punishment, but it’s a way to help them calm down.

If you want to know what your dog is like when you’re away, you can set up cameras in your home so you can see your dog. This way, you can figure out if they are destructive or stressed while you’re out. But if you do have pet sitters, make sure to tell them about the cameras.

Securing Your Backyard

Most dogs enjoy spending time outside, and if you have a backyard, you should make sure it’s secure for your dog. There are a few ways to do this.

A fence is the most obvious method. A fence acts as a boundary and, in most cases, your dog won’t be able to get through it. It’s always important to make sure your fence is actually secure, as some dogs might be able to jump over it, or even go underneath it, or find a less secure area of the fence.

Another option is a hidden dog fence, which is ideal if you either can’t install a secure fence or you don’t want to. It works by using an underground system that connects to a collar to let your dog know when they’re at the perimeter.

Microchipping Your Dog

If your dog escapes and gets lost, it can be stressful for the whole family. You’re worried they might get hurt or stolen, and the longer they’re gone, the more difficult it is for everyone involved, including your dog.

Microchipping your pet is the best way to make sure they’re safe and can be found as quickly as possible. You can also pair it with a GPS collar, so you can track your dog’s location in real time and, if they do get lost, you can find them almost as soon as you know your pet is missing. This reduces the chance that they could get injured while they’re away from home.
