3 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Self-Confidence

Who doesn’t love to feel good about themselves? We all have days when we’re particularly confident, but self-confidence and self-esteem are something else entirely. They’re a deeper part of who we are and therefore are primarily built in childhood.

There are many benefits of having a healthy amount of self-confidence. In fact, it’s linked to just about every element of a happy, fulfilling life. But how do we build this trait in our children?

Well, parenting might not be an exact science, but there are a few things you can do to help ensure that your child develops into a confident, capable person. Read on to learn how to build childhood self-confidence that will carry on through the rest of your little ones’ lives.

1. Help Them Learn New Things

One of the most effective ways to boost your children’s mental health is to help them learn new things. The best part about being a kid, and about life in general, is that there’s always an opportunity to learn something new.

Show your child the magic of learning and the delight that comes along with it by helping them learn how to dress themselves, read, ride a bike, etc. You could even sign them up for an after-school activity, such as dance lessons for children with sanelijodance.com.

It can be nerve-racking to let them do things on their own, but allowing your child to take healthy risks is a good thing!

2. Praise Them the Right Way

Praise is an essential part of developing a better self-image, but you have to do it the right way or your efforts can have a negative effect. First, avoid overpraising. If your child fails at something, don’t tell them they did a great job. Instead, tell them you’re proud of them for not giving up and assure them that things will go better next time.

Also, try not to only praise results. Getting an A on a test is a great accomplishment, but your child should receive more praise for their effort and attitude.

3. Set a Good Example

It can be tough at times, but never forget that your children learn by example. Specifically, your example. When your children see your self-confidence, they’re more likely to build self-confidence of their own.

Put honest effort into your everyday household tasks such as cooking dinner or washing the car, and do it with a smile. Having the right attitude about tasks, even those you consider chores, will teach your children to keep a positive attitude too.

Set Your Child up for Success by Building Their Self-Confidence

Helping your child to build self-confidence is beneficial not only in the short-term but long after they’ve become adults as well. As with anything, building healthy habits and mindsets as a child will make it more likely that they become happy, healthy adults.

Remember, the key is to raise confident, not coddled, children. Make them feel special, but put more effort into making them see the value in their own accomplishments.
