How to Look After Your Hearing Health

Your hearing health shapes your experience of life, allowing you to share happy conversations with friends, listen to your favorite songs, and listen to the sweet sounds of Mother Earth. Like your eyesight, it’s one of those underrated privileges that many of us take for granted.

But it’s important to remember that hearing health is generally less robust than we think it is. You won’t damage your eyes by looking at the world too much, but you can absolutely damage your ears by listening too much — or at least, too loudly.

Hearing health is a growing concern worldwide, with studies suggesting that some 2.5 billion people may be living with some degree of hearing loss by 2050. While hearing loss isn’t always preventable, those who proactively look after their hearing health can significantly improve their chances of finding themselves included in that statistic.

Looking after your hearing health is also a lot more straightforward than you might assume. In this post, we’ll run through a few effective ways to keep your hearing in as good condition as possible.

Get Your Ears Checked

Hearing loss tends to happen gradually, and many people only realize that they have it once it’s become noticeable.

One way to manage your hearing health is to get your hearing checked early in adulthood. This can help to establish your baseline hearing, which can then be used as a benchmark for future hearing tests. It’s recommended to get your first hearing test in your twenties. By the time you’re in your fifties, it’s best to book an appointment once a year.

Take Action If You Have Hearing Loss

As we said above, hearing loss is common — and it’s becoming even more so. If you have hearing loss, then taking action early is paramount for preventing the consequences of untreated hearing loss, which include social isolation, depression, and, on a long-term basis, cognitive decline.

Studies have shown that around 60% of people who could benefit from hearing aids do not wear them, either because they’re unaware they need them or because they believe in the outdated myth that hearing aids are big and clunky. A good audiologist will offer a range of subtle, effective hearing aid styles, including Invisible in the Canal (IIC), Completely in the Canal (CIC), and In the Canal (ITC). In addition to boosting quality of life, treating hearing loss early with a hearing device can help prevent further hearing decline.

Look After Your Ears

A significant percentage of hearing loss is considerably avoidable, with one estimate suggesting that some 60% of hearing loss in children and adults is preventable through health precautions. You can keep your hearing health in check by avoiding listening to loud noises for extended periods of time — a big chunk of hearing loss cases among younger adults is due to listening to music through headphones at dangerously loud volumes. The simple act of turning the volume down and giving your ears a break can go a long way towards keeping them healthy.
