Vacay Time: 5 Fun Things to Do in Baltimore

Baltimore

Baltimore, located in Maryland, is an iconic U.S. city. It is most well-known as an important seaport that plays host to Fort McHenry- the birthplace of the National Anthem.

Also known as ”Charm City,” Baltimore has become extremely popular in recent years. This has given rise to numerous trendy restaurants, hotels, festivals, breweries, and more.

If you visit Baltimore for one thing, it has to be the steamed crabs, dusted with Old Bay spice. Other than that, here are five fun things to do in Baltimore.

Explore Charm City with These Fun Things to Do in Baltimore

Baltimore managed to earn a coveted spot on none other than the New York Times’ Top Places to Visit in 2018. It’s also been dubbed the ”coolest city on the East Coast” by Travel & Leisure magazine.

But the best way to tell if these titles are well-earned is to see for yourself. Here are the top five things you should do when in Baltimore:

  1. The National Aquarium

This is probably one of Baltimore’s most-visited attractions and for good reason. The National Aquarium houses more than 20,000 specimens.

It also includes fascinating exhibits of the Atlantic coral reef and an immersion theater in 4D. Kids can marvel at the open-ocean shark tank and multiple wildlife and mammal pavillions.

If the excitement of the aquarium is not enough, check out this iconic Baltimore-based escape room challenge.

  1. Federal Hill Park

This sprawling park stretches a whopping 10-acres and is just a short stroll from the Inner Harbor area. It offers stunning scenery and uninterrupted views over the waterfront.

It’s close to the city’s top attractions, including the aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Power Plant, and many historic ships. The park was also used as a line of defense against the city during the war of 1812. Just make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes for the climb to the top!

  1. The Avenue in Hampden

If you’re looking for something hip and cool, then the Avenue in Hampden is where it’s at. This area is a hipster haven and offers a plethora of privately-owned, quirky stores, cafes, bars, and restaurants.

This area is also well-known for some of the city’s most popular and eclectic festivals including Honest and Miracle on 34th Street.

Sample some of the best food in the city at the Food Market, Avenue Kitchen & Bar, Dylan’s Oyster Cellar, and the Bluebird Cocktail Room.

  1. Lexington Market

This is one of the region’s oldest markets to-date, with a history dating back 236 years!

It’s home to over 100 different vendors who sell anything and everything, ranging from fried chicken, seafood, peanut brittle, baked goods- you name it.

Lexington Market is one of six public markets and allows some of the city’s best food producers to show off their goods. If you go, be sure to try the Maryland-style crab cakes – what the region is best known for.

  1. Sagamore Spirit

If booze is on your agenda, then Sagamore Spirit is worth a visit. This is a relatively young distillery that offers tours and interactive exhibits all centered around Maryland’s production of rye whiskey.

Situated along the waterfront, you’ll have a chance to learn about the fermentation process and the bottling process. The venue is also host to an impressive 40-foot tall copper whiskey sill. After your tour, enjoy a whiskey cocktail aboard a sunset tour with a Baltimore water taxi service! Because, why not?

I have been very fortunate to have gotten to visit several states in my life. I have never got to visit Maryland but this post makes me want to. I need to put this on my list of Must-See Places.
