Halloween is one of those touch and go holidays that needs to be introduced to young children in just the right amount of spooky excitement to get them captivated, but not enough to induce nightmares. I know from experience my four year old has watched some scary movies geared towards young children that were too over the top and he couldn’t sleep for days unless he was glued to my hip. The Awesome Adventures: Thrills & Chills DVD episodes consist of a bit of fog, talk of monsters, and Halloween images to get children thrilled, but not overly scared. There are also some good messages conveyed within the episodes such as the importance of practicing safety with candles and lit pumpkins. Additionally, the stories show how most of the ghostly encounters we have are merely our imaginations going wild and are able to be explained.
My son’s favorite episode on the DVD was “Trix’s Pumpkin Pie.” Trix offers to deliver Mrs. Percival’s delicious pumpkin pie to Mr. Sabatini’s pizza parlor for Farmer Pickles, so it can be enjoyed at the Harvest Supper. Realizing she also promised Bob that she would bring him another bag of wood chips and took on too many jobs, Trix decides to have Spud look after the pie while she goes to get the wood chippings. However, leaving the pie with Spud was not such a good idea and Trix gets worried he won’t be able to resist in the temptation of digging in!
