How to Know if a Career in Healthcare Is Right For You

It’s not hard to see why so many people consider a career in healthcare. It’s a well-respected industry to work in, it can provide a good salary, and there are plenty of opportunities for career advancement, too. Throw in the fact that qualified healthcare workers can usually walk straight into a well-paying job, and it comes as no surprise that healthcare is usually up for consideration when a person is considering which career to pursue.

But of course, there’s a difference between daydreaming about working in healthcare and actually doing it. So, how do you find out if healthcare really is the right option for you? We’ve put together some handy strategies that should make the decision-making process more straightforward.

Understand Yourself

The precise details of a healthcare role vary from one job to the next, but there are some overlapping themes that you’ll typically find across all healthcare roles. Having a good understanding of yourself, your likes, and, perhaps most importantly, your dislikes, can go a long way towards determining your suitability for the industry. For example, you’ll likely be a good fit for a career in healthcare if you enjoy helping others, you can handle pressure, and you’re excellent at working in teams. Those three qualities alone will go a long way towards being successful in healthcare.

Gain Experience

You can learn a lot about what it’s like to work in healthcare by reading books and watching videos, but the best way to figure out whether it’s right for you is to seek opportunities that’ll put you in healthcare environments. For example, you could volunteer at a local hospital, go for an EMS ride-along experience, or get a job at a senior living facility. It’s also recommended to learn CPR or basic first aid. If you find that you loved the process of learning first aid and felt right at home on the EMS ride-along, then there’s every chance that healthcare is for you.

Take an Online Career Test

What you choose to do for your career will be your decision, but there are some tools you can use to help you. Online career tests use information about you to present careers that you might be suitable for. Completing a few of these tests and then identifying any overlapping answers is a good way to approach finding a career — and if all the signs say that you’d be suitable for a role in healthcare, then you’ll have some data-backed evidence to base your decision on.

Speak to Current Healthcare Workers

The more information you have, the more likely it is that you’ll make the right decision. While you might be drawn to healthcare, it’s best to speak to people who currently work in that field about their experience and then see if you’re still interested. Many people have romantic ideas about healthcare; speaking to a friend or family member who works in the sector can provide an honest view of the pros and cons. If you’re still interested when they stop speaking, then it’ll be worthwhile pursuing.
