How to Put on a Dog Harness

In the US, 45% of households own dogs. This means it’s very likely you’re a dog owner, whether it’s been years or minutes.

Either way, you probably take your furry friend on walks with a collar and leash. But you’re looking for something more comfortable, and it seems like a dog harness is the answer.

You’ve ordered one and unpacked it, only to be confused about how to use it. Worse yet, Fido doesn’t seem to like it!

Read on to find out how to put on a dog harness so your pup takes to it.

Step-in Harnesses

For this type of harness, first unbuckle it and lay it flat on the ground. Position your dog over it, then gently place its front paws in the loops. Some harnesses will say which paw needs to go where, so take a closer look to see if there are further instructions.

Once your pet’s paws are in these loops, you can pull the straps over its back and snap them together securely. Check that the straps aren’t choking your dog and that the chest strap isn’t going across the shoulder joint. Adjust if necessary; the harness should be tight, but loose enough for you to fit 2 fingers comfortably.

Overhead Harnesses

An overhead harness may be more difficult to put on your dog, as it’ll have to first go through the neckpiece (if you’re finding it challenging, we have tips in a later section). After getting your pup’s head through this piece, you should pull the top strap across its back and the bottom straps under its belly.

Have your puppy step through the loop if the harness is connected on one side. Then clasp the straps together on the opposite side.

If the harness isn’t designed that way, then clasp the straps on both sides of the harness. Do a check that the harness fits and adjust if necessary.

How to Make Putting on a Dog Harness Easier

Finding the best dog harness can take a little trial and error; don’t be surprised if your dog doesn’t like the initial one. Go shopping and get a good selection if needed.

While you put on a dog harness, make sure you keep a positive tone. Don’t panic, as your dog will pick up on your anxiety and won’t like the harness.

Be gentle and praise your dog as you go along. Feed it treats if it allows you to put its paws and neck through the harness.

Start slow and have your pet wear the harness for short periods at first, then gradually increase the wear time. If it ever seems uncomfortable, check the fit and take it off for a break.

Know How to Put on a Dog Harness for Your Pup’s Comfort

Knowing how to put on a dog harness correctly can make all the difference between your pet loving or hating it.

Just remember to be patient and positive. Taking some extra time to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort will definitely pay off!
