Road Trips and Kids: Fast Family-Friendly Packing Tips and Tricks

packing

Packing for a camping trip can be daunting, but with some careful planning and a few helpful tips, you can ensure that you have everything you and your family will need for a fun outdoor adventure. When you stay organized, you’ll find that the entire planning process goes smooth. Once you pack up the car, you can simply focus on have a great time with your family.

Space Matters

When packing for your camping trip, you’ll need to keep space in mind. Depending on the size of your vehicle, you may have a very limited amount of space. Dodge in Alberta has a large selection of family-friendly vehicles, so if you are in the market for something new, you might want to consider an auto that’s perfect for road trips and camping holidays.

Make a List

checklist

While many people are great about keeping track of details in their minds, you’ll find that it’s far more reliable to create a master packing list when it comes to camping. There are so many important things to include on your list that you don’t want to risk forgetting anything like Joey’s asthma inhaler or Maggie’s allergy medicine. Once you have a master list, you can even create smaller lists from it in order to delegate some of the packing responsibilities to other members of your family.

Organize Luggage

Keeping the luggage and bags organized will make your packing process and camping trip go more smoothly. For instance, it’s ideal to ensure that every person has one piece of luggage with their own personal supplies like clothing. If space is a concern, you might opt for one large suitcase to hold all of the kids’ clothes. You should also plan to devote one bag for toiletries so everyone knows where to find soap or shampoo when they need it. Similarly, you’ll want to store snacks together and cooking tools as well. You should also remember to bring along a laundry bag in order to keep soiled clothing separate from clean clothing. Don’t forget to include a small satchel for medications and a first aid kit; be sure this always stays with an adult.

Check and Double Check

Once you have all your supplies together, use your master list to check off that all items listed are included in your bags. Do this before you pack up your vehicle so you can easily inspect each bag or piece of luggage. Once you know that you have all of your essentials packed, you can allow the kids some optional items like a few toys that are ideal for the outdoors, art supplies, or travel games.

What about Fido?

If you’re bringing along the most important member of the household, your family dog, be sure that you don’t forget its supplies. It will need plenty of food and water for the camping trip too! You might want to remember to bring along a flea collar and dog soap in case it needs a washing before the long trip home.

Camping is fun, but it does require careful planning to ensure that you have all that you need for spending time outdoors. These tips will help you keep organized so that your packing and preparation becomes a breeze.

I keep a “go” bag for everyone in the family with basics like toothbrush, deodorant, floss, etc. so nothing gets forgotten.
