In the US, there are around 45 million birdwatchers! They’re fascinating creatures, and what’s great is, you can find many species right in your own backyard.

Some might already come visit you on their own accord, but what if you want to view more species? Then you’ll have to attract them with the right types of food in your bird feeder. If you put in their favorites, then they’re sure to flock to your home!

In this article, we’ll discuss the best bird feeder food to use based on the wildlife you get in your area.

Sunflower Seeds

This is one of the most popular types of bird feed you’ll see. It’s in pretty much all birdseed mixes because it has lots of healthy fats and fiber.

These actually come in several forms. Sunflower hearts are the most common (sunflower seeds without shells), black sunflower seeds (higher in calories), and sunflower chips (full seeds broken apart).

You’ll attract blue tits, collared dove finches, nuthatches, dunnocks, and sparrows with sunflower seeds. These seeds can go in any type of bird feeder.

Peanuts

Peanuts are also great for your bird food feeder. They’re another source of high fat and protein to power birds up!

You can give either whole peanuts, or choose the split or granule forms. If you’re looking for mesh bird feeder food to prevent younger birds from choking, then the first two are good choices.

Peanuts are ideal for attracting blue tits, great tits, doves, jays, and wrens.

Suet

Suet is basically a big ball of fat with seeds, berries, and insects in it. While you can hang them up all year long, they’re best for the wintertime since it provides birds with plenty of energy.

While most suet products come as a big ball, you can also get them as blocks and pellets.

This is best for tits, finches, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and robins.

Millet Seeds

Millet seeds are lower in fat, but provide lots of calcium, protein, iron, and vitamin B. Plus, it aids digestion, so it’s an excellent choice.

The birds you’ll get with millet seed are collared doves, finches, and house sparrows.

While you can put millet seed in any bird feeder, you’ll want to put in other types of seed to prevent it from falling out.

Niger Seeds

Niger seeds are small black seeds that come from Guizotia flowers. They’re shelled already, so you don’t have to worry about shells falling everywhere.

The birds that like Niger seeds include doves, finches, quails, buntings, and sparrows.

Because the seeds are very small, you should use a fine-mesh bird feeder and put Niger seeds with bigger feed, such as sunflower seeds.
