How to Save on Electric Bills (and Save the Earth)

Did you know that the energy used to complete a google search is equal to turning on a 60W light bulb for 17 seconds? It goes to show that when it comes to electricity in the home, every little counts.

With all of us spending more time at home over the past year, energy usage in the home and electricity bills have increased significantly. The good news is that small changes you make in your home really add up over time.

So, why do yourself and the planet a favor and read on for our guide to help you save on electric bills, instead of asking google!

Replace Old Appliances

It may sound counterintuitive to fork out for new appliances when you are trying to save money, but old appliances can be energy inefficient, costing you more money in electricity bills.

Old appliances can run slower and require more energy to achieve the same output as a new appliance. For example, today’s air conditioners can use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners made in the mid-1970s.

Many modern appliances also have a legal requirement to adhere to energy efficiency regulations, meaning that whilst saving some money, you are also doing your bit for the environment.

Change Your Lightbulbs

By replacing the lightbulbs in your home, you could reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40kg a year.

Lighting a home makes up a significant proportion of energy use in the home, so it’s a great way to cut costs. LED lightbulbs are the most efficient bulbs around and can save you over $30 a year. You can choose from various lighting types, such as a warm glow which will make for a cozy home environment.

It is the perfect excuse for a home makeover!

Make Lifestyle Adjustments

Making small lifestyle adjustments require little effort and the results really add up! Start by bleed your radiators and ensure your house is well insulated by simply closing the curtains on winter evenings.

Turning off appliances at the switch is also a great way to save on electric bills. If you are unsure whether an appliance uses energy when it’s turned off, a good trick is to check the temperature. If it’s warm, it’s using energy and should be switched off at the plug.

Install Solar Panels

By installing solar panels in your home, you can cut energy costs and help the environment at the same time. Solar panels even store excess energy collected in the day, so you can use it in your home once the sun has gone down.

If you’d like to know more from professional solar panel installers in the North Carolina area, contact Blue Raven Solar for expert advice.

Ready to Save On Electric Bills?

Now you know some simple ways that you can save on electric bills. By making small adjustments to your lifestyle, such as turning appliances off at the switch, you will also be doing your bit for the environment!
