These Are the Most Common Signs of Termites

termites

Statistics show termites infest an estimated 600,000 homes and cause more than 35 billion dollars of damage each year.

These tiny bugs get into your homes, eat away the structure, and cause costly headaches that can seem endless. Unlike some pest infestations, termites can do their damage while hidden behind walls so by the time you notice, the damage is extensive.

Fortunately, there are a few signs of termites that act as an early warning system. By noticing these signs, you can stop the problem before it comes to an expensive situation.

If you are wondering if you are termites, here are a few signs to look for.

Swarms

Similar to bees, a pair of termites will leave their colony to mate. They will create a new colony, and eventually, a swarm of termites will invade bushes, trees, and other shrubberies. If you see swarms, follow these directions for what to do.

Droppings

One of the common termite signs is their powder-like droppings. Unlike many other pests, termite droppings are dark and can easily be mistaken for dirt. If you notice small piles of dirt in or around your home, you likely have a problem.

Mud Structures

A great tip for how to tell if you have termites is to look for mud structures. Certain species of termites will use moist soil to create tubes and structures for their colony. These structures are easily noticeable inside and outside of your home.

Swollen or Damaged Wood

One sign of termite damage in your home is swollen or damaged wood. You might notice warped wood around your windows, doors, or on your floorboards. While there are a few causes for warped wood, it’s also an indication of a termite infestation.

Clicking Noises

An undeniable sign of termites in your house is clicking noises coming from your walls. Termites are notoriously loud eaters and will make noises that you can hear throughout your home. If you hear clicking or munching noises from inside of your walls, you have a termite problem.

Hollow Wood

Certain species of termites eat wood from the inside out. This results in crumbling structures and a lot of damage to your home. If you notice wooden beams or other wooden items in your home sound hollow, check for termites.

Termites

One of the most obvious signs of termites is seeing the small bugs in or outside of your home. This can be difficult because termites and ants look similar. It’s important to learn the differences so you can spot a termite immediately.

These Are the Common Signs of Termites to Look For

By noticing these signs of termites, you can take care of the problem right away.

If you notice termite swarms, dropping, or mud structures, you likely have an infestation. You may also have a problem if the wood in your home is swollen, damaged, or hollow. If you hear clicking noises or see the tiny bugs, you likely have a problem.

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a visit from your local pest control company immediately.
