The Benefits of Filtering Your Drinking Water

In 1974, the Safe Water Act was enacted to ensure the quality of drinking water in America. Even though this act made a huge difference to the safety of drinking water, there are still many people who choose to drink filtered water, and there are good reasons for doing so. The information below explains why filtering your drinking water can have many benefits.

It Is Healthier

Drinking water is much safer than it used to be thanks to the Safe Water Act; however, there are still some contaminants that can find their way into our home systems. Many of the processes used at water plants leach chemicals such as chlorine into our drinking water. These chemicals should not be consumed and can have a detrimental effect on our health. There is also a chance that a variety of micro-organisms can make their way into the water system, through damaged pipes or accidental contamination. Filtering your tap water can be a final line of defense against these contaminants.

It Can Reduce Costs

Many people chose to drink bottled water instead of tap water, and while this may seem like a good idea, it can be very expensive, with $17.1 billion being spent on bottled water in a year period from 2018-2019 in the US. If an average family of four spends $3114.67 a year on bottled water (based on average daily consumption), they could save $2878.57 by switching to a basic home water filtration system.

It Is Practical

If you go hiking or camping, having enough water is both vital and difficult to achieve. It is not ideal to have to carry around multiple bottles of water, and you need to be sure you have enough to last. You may decide a better solution is to drink from natural water sources, but you can’t always be sure that it is safe to drink. Fortunately, there are now many portable water filters on the market which are lightweight and easy to use in the great outdoors. Taking one of these filters on your next camping trip means you can purify water from lakes and streams, helping to protect you from waterborne illnesses.

Environmentally Friendly

The production of plastic used for water bottles uses a lot of energy and resources such as oil and water and produces many harmful chemicals, some of which may remain in the plastic and leech out into the water. Although this plastic can be recycled and used again, the reality if that only 1 in 6 are actually recycled. Add in the carbon footprint of transporting the water from its source, and you have a very environmentally unfriendly product. Filtering your own water is more economical and reduces your carbon footprint as well as waste and pollution.

We all know how important water is to keep us healthy, so we should make sure we consume water of the best quality possible. Filtering water not only removes many potential contaminants but can also improve the taste of your water.
