It’s Time to Ride: 5 Horseback Riding Tips to Know Before You Go

horses

There’s no feeling more freeing than horseback riding. It’s just you and your horse in nature together, the wind at your backs.

Though it’s a fun past-time, riders need to take it seriously. Horseback riding can be very dangerous. Studies show that 81% of equestrians have had at least one riding-related injury in their lifetime.

First-time riders should educate themselves before getting into the saddle. Keep reading our blog to find five horseback riding tips for a successful first ride.

  1. Posture is Everything

The correct posture is critical when it comes to riding horseback. As the rider, you’ll be more comfortable and less prone to injury. Your position on the saddle will also affect how your horse moves.

Sit up straight and make a conscious effort to push the balls of your feet in the stirrups.

  1. Be Mindful of Your Outfit

You need to put some thought into what to wear horseback riding.

Full-length pants will protect your legs from chafing.

Your shirts should fit tight to prevent them from tangling in your riding gear.

Boots with a small heel keep your feet from slipping through the stirrups.

  1. Get to Know the Gear

Safe horseback riding often means you’ll be dealing with a lot of gear. You’ll need to familiarize yourself with this equipment to make sure you’re set to go riding. The average rider will need a saddle, saddle pad, girth, and a bridle with reins.

Horseback riding with the best saddle will keep you and your horse comfortable. There are several types of saddles, each used for a different horse riding discipline.

If you’re not sure what saddle to use when riding a horse, ask a master saddler. They can help you measure your horse to ensure you’re getting the right fit.

A gel saddle pad is excellent for even weight distribution on your horse’s back.

Even if you are riding under instruction, you should have some understanding of the equipment. You can then tell if all the gear is in the right place and secure for riding.

  1. Learn Rein Etiquette

You’re going to need to learn how to use the reins to control your horse.

The first rule of thumb is to be gentle. Remember, the reins are attached to your horse’s headgear. If you pull too hard, you’ll be yanking them around by the mouth.

Hold one rein in each hand, with your thumbs on top. If they’re the right length, your arms should form a right angle at your elbow.

When steering your horse, use slow and smooth movements. To go left, move your left hand as if you’re opening a door. Use a gentle hand to pull back on the reins to stop or slow your horse down.

  1. Learn How to Adjust Your Speed

Before you think about getting onto a horse, you need to know how to control your speed. Squeezing the horse’s sides with your thighs will show you want to go faster.

We recommend getting familiar with walking and trotting before attempting a run.
