Families Who Love to Fish: 8 of the Best Family Fishing Trips in America

fishing trips

If you’re planning a summer getaway, pleasing every member of the family can sometimes be a challenge. Choosing the perfect destination relies on a number of factors, especially if you have children to entertain.

The great news is that the U.S. is packed to the brim with gorgeous outdoor scenery and a plethora of activities in nearly every state.

So, if you’re a family that adores the great outdoors, these are some the top family fishing trips in America you simply can’t skip.

1. MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA

Miami is well-known for its deep-sea fishing charters and challenging catches of yellowfin tuna, Amberjack, mahi-mahi, and even blue marlin.

If you are a family that loves a fishing challenge, then Miami Beach is your go-to for trophy fish. What’s even better about Miami is that local restaurants will prepare and cook your day’s catch for you!

If you prefer to fish from the shore, there are plenty of piers and docks lining the pastel-hued coastline for a more relaxed fishing experience.

Check out these fishing reports for more on experiencing the waters of Miami.

2. WHITE RIVER, ARKANSAS

With a huge network of streams, rivers, lakes, bayous, and creeks, Arkansas is one of the most fishable states in the U.S.

The state is home to 9,700 miles of streams and rivers, as well as over 60,000 acres of lakes. This offers massive opportunity to cast your line and reel in a variety of freshwater fish. Some of which range from trout, bass, catfish, bluegill, walleye, and crappie.

White River is one of the most popular and abundant fishing regions of Arkansas, stocked with thousands of rainbow trout each year. This makes White River a great spot for newbie fishermen looking to gain experience.

3. LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK

If you live on the northeast coast of America, then you already be familiar with the Lake Placid region. If not, it’s definitely worth exploring for a family fishing trip.

The region is comprised of 8 large lakes and ponds as well as 10 rivers and brooks for the perfect opportunity to catch up to 15 different species of fish.

If flyfishing is more your speed, the east branch of the Ausable River is the ideal spot – but be sure to plan your visit in May/June. Other exceptional fishing spots in the region include Franklin Falls Flow and Union Falls for walleye. Head to the Saranac Chain of Lakes for waters abundant in pike.

An added bonus? The Lake Placid region is super RV friendly and offers the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain RV park for just over $50 per day. Pets are also allowed, too!

4. KENAI PENINSULA, ALASKA

Now, we understand that Alaska is not exactly an accessible destination if you live in the more southern states of the U.S. But there’s a reason this fishing destination has made it to this list!

The Kenai Peninsula is known for its spectacular scenery and abundant fishing waters where you can reel in salmon, halibut, rainbow trout, and others. All of these species make for brilliant fish-eating, as you may well know!

A top tip: rent a cabin in the borough of Soldotna rather than staying in a pricey hotel or the Kenai River lodges.

5. LAKE OF THE OZARKS, MISSOURI

If Missouri is known for anything, it has to be its magnificent network of Ozark lakes, spanning a whopping 54,000 acres across the state.

If you and the family are bass fishing fans, then the Ozarks are made for you. In addition, you can expect to catch baitfish such as shad, bluegill, crappie and several species of catfish.

Missed your chance to go in the summer? No big deal. The Ozarks are also well-known for some of the best winter fishing. January and February are some of the best months for fishing!

6. MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIFORNIA

Head to the Eastern Sierra in the state of California for some of the most beautiful fishing scenery you could wish for.

With its surrounding snow-capped mountain range, lapped by the crystal clear waters of Mammoth Lakes, this spot is made for nature lovers.

Mammoth Lakes is home to a network of dozens of lakes providing ample opportunity for fishing for all members of the family. You can expect to catch plenty of trout in this region.

Additionally, Mammoth Lakes offers a plethora of family-friendly activities and attractions if you’re keen to take a break from fishing. You can also choose to camp, rent a cabin or a boat for the duration of your stay.

7. PORT ISABEL, TEXAS

Port Isabel is rich in fishing waters. Located quite far south of the Texas coast, this is the perfect fishing destination to reel in catches of speckled trout and redfish.

Port Isabel is also home to a range of activities to entertain the family. Some of these include dolphin cruises, wading trips, and fishing offshore adventures. Book the beach trip experience on South Padre Island and experience the true beauty of this region.

8. BEAR LAKE STATE PARK, IDAHO

This is a fantastic fishing and outdoor destination for a quick break from the city for the entire family.

Other than plenty of fishing opportunity for cutthroat trout, lake, rainbow trout, and whitefish, Bear Lake State Park also offers hiking trails, biking, watersports, and bird watching.

If you’re looking to unwind with the family, surrounded by the quintessential wilderness of Idaho, this is a top destination.

IF YOU WANT TO GO FURTHER

Just as our final message to you, if you do want to travel outside of the United States to go fishing, there are some beautiful destinations out there. For example, you could look into Tamarindo Costa Rica fishing where there are beautiful waters full of fish just waiting for you. You can do some more research into this if you want to, we just wanted to drop this in there as a final thought for those who have explored most of the places America has to offer!
