5 Ways You Can Make Your Neighborhood A Better Place

neighborhood-bright-daylight-flora

We can’t always choose our neighbors, but we can make a difference to the area we live in. As a parent we’re always worrying about things like crime, litter, drugs, dangerous parking and bad drivers and that’s on top of all the other things we have to worry about! Making your neighborhood a better place isn’t something that can happen overnight, it might take a while, but if you and other like-minded people in your neighborhood can see this as an opportunity to invest in, not just their quality of life, but also the lives of the little ones who’ll grow up there, then you’ll certainly make progress quickly.

Unsure of where to begin? Here are some simple ideas you can bring to the table.

Signage. And lots of it.

Applying some simple, basic rules in the neighborhood is easy with good signage. And these rules or instructions can make the area a better place. For example, if local or people visiting the area tend to park their cars on a grassy area in the neighborhood then no parking signs should help to prevent this.

Signs that advise drivers to slow down, and signs that make them aware of children in the area- for example at a playground – or elderly people crossing the road are all great examples.

Make plenty of areas to sit down

This sounds like a very small thing but creating places in your neighborhood for people to sit down, creates a sense of community. Erect a few benches or seating areas around the neighborhood and you’ll find that people pushing prams will stop to feed their little ones, the elderly we strike up conversations with those passing by. It’s a simple but effective way to bring a community together. Double check with your council for any rules or regulations you need to adhere to.

Look after your property

If you make the outside of your property look neat, tidy and well kept then others will certainly follow suit. Taking pride in the exterior of your home means that your local area will also benefit! Keep your lawn mown, your hedges trimmed and look after your gutters!

Litter picking

Litter is a common problem, everywhere. So, keeping your local area clean and tidy will really make it a nicer place to live. You could try to organize a litter pick with others in your street or start out on your own by picking up anything you see on the way to the shops or the park.

Make friends with your neighbors

Back in the old days, neighbors would think nothing of walking into next doors house for a chat or a cup of sugar. Things are a little different now, with people mainly keeping themselves to themselves. You’re entitled to privacy in your own home, but make sure that next time you see your neighbors, make the effort and say hello. Making friends is a great way to build a better neighborhood for everyone.
