8 Things to Do While in France

France is a beautiful country. From the mountainous landscapes and golden beaches across the South of France to the world-renowned tourist landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, it has so much to offer. If you are planning on visiting France in the near future, read on to discover what you should you incorporate into your holiday.

1. Fill your suitcase with market goodies – There are many great food markets and flea markets across France. In the Dordogne town of Sarlat, food is the main attraction, and they have a Wednesday and Saturday morning market where you can enjoy Sarladaise specialties, including confit de canard, foie gras, walnuts and honey. For flea markets, head to the biggest in Europe; the Grande Braderie in Lille. It attracts more than three million visitors every year and dates back to the 12th century.

2. Take a river cruise – There are many river cruises France-wide, but Burgundy is an area well worth a recommendation for this type of activity. With a network of centuries-old canals and rivers, Burgundy is the perfect spot for pleasure cruising. For sheer beauty and relaxation, there is nothing better.

3. Enjoy the art at Musee de Louvre – It is no coincidence that this is the most visited museum in the world. It is an artistic dream. The glassy pyramid itself will take your breath away. Once you step inside, it gets even better, with everything from Leonardo’s Mona Lisa to Egyptian mummies.

4. Experience an architectural awakening – France is home to some truly incredible buildings and structures. Of course, the Eiffel Tower does not need any introduction, but there are plenty of other incredible places to marvel over. The Pagode de Chanteloup is a must-visit for anyone that is into architectural oddities. This is an 18th-century Chinese building, which is the only remaining part of the Versailles-inspired chateau owned by Louis XV’s finance minister, Duc de Choiseul.

5. Take a trip to the Notre Dame Cathedral – After the publication of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the popularity of the cathedral in Paris soared even further. This church is a stunning reflection of the prestige in France’s capital city, boasting the indispensable Gargoyles, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, rose-coloured stained glass windows, ornate spires, and sizable lofty archways.

6. Enjoy authentic French cuisine – French food is known worldwide for its finesse and traditional cooking approaches. Make sure you embrace authentic cooking while you are there. You won’t regret it. Check out some French recipes to whet your appetite.

7. Hit the slopes – France is known for being a great skiing destination. There are plenty of different ski resorts that offer a thrilling vacation, including Val d’Isere. You can also ride the bobsleigh run at La Plagne for something different, or why not go snowboarding in Courchevel?

8. Visit Versailles Palace – For a taste of true glamour and luxury, Versailles Palace is a must. The home of Louis XIV, this palace features gilded royal apartments and the incredible Hall of Mirrors. The quintessential landscaping and meticulously manicured lawns allow you to get lost in a fairytale.
